Not sure yet how I'll vote, but I have no objections to raising the TOT tax and moving the MTS bus yard, I don't like the land use/footprint of Qualcomm, and contiguous covention center expansion doesn't benefit me in any way. The Stadium is something that we don't have the budget for, and getting a loan from the NFL for billions of dollars is a pretty big gamble. The stadium's NFL events don't get that kind of oversight.Įxpanding the Convention Center is something that we're working on getting a budget for. All convention fiscal activity is overseen by the city. Compared to the stadium, the convention center seems pretty transparent about it's generated revenue. A bunch of tourism, tax revenue, etc are made from even the smaller conventions. There's 3 or 4 convention center events every month, and they're usually actual conventions. There's SDSU Aztec games, and there's Giant Used Car Tent Sales and other minor events, but none of these generate noticeable amounts of tourism or tax revenue.Ĭomic con takes 4 days, but the rest of the year is open for other conventions. The chargers only played 16 home games last year, so that's only 16 days that we're fully staffed and generating revenue through NFL games. The biggest difference is the number of events, and the revenue they make. Both are threatening to leave without expansions. Both theoretically get a lot of tourists in, and bring in money to San Diego. The more I think about it, the more parallels I see between Comic Con threatening to leave and the Chargers threatening to leave. 226-3900 x3893)Įxpanding the convention center is profitable for the city, but not in the same way that creating a new stadium would be profitable.
